Simpson McHughes enlisted in the Confederate Army on December 31, 1863.He enlisted as a private in Forrests Regiment of Alabama Cavalry.The above company later became Company A, 18th Regiment of Tennessee Cav. (Newsom's).  During the war this battalion was broken up and part of it became part of the 18th Cav and other part of the 11th. Simpson was transferred to the part that became the 18th (Newsom's) Cavalry. They were engaged at the battle of Tishimingo Creek. This battle was also called the Battle for Brlce's Crossroads by the Confederates. During the time that Simpson was  
with this unit it was under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. At the time of his enlistment Simpson's wife Nancy was five months pregnant with their seventh child, who was born on May 22, 1864. They named this child Bedford Forrest McHughes. Simpson McHughes Pvt, Company C, 19 & 20 Tennessee Cavalry (another reorganization) residence McNairy County, Tennessee appears on a roll of POW's Commanded by Col. R.M. Russell, surrendered at Citronville, Alabama by Lt Gen R. Taylor,CSA, to MaJ Gen R.S. Canby USA, May 4, 1865, and paroled at Gainesville, Alabama on May 11, 1865.
